Building in winter

Winter is better for building than it seems

Most people plan to build in summer. But snow and frost do not bother a log home – and a well-prepared winter build has several advantages that are hard to find in summer.

Calmer authorities

Outside the main season, authorities have less work, so permits and inspections often go through faster.

Tradespeople are easier to book

Experienced tradespeople are easier to find in winter than in the summer peak, when their calendars are full.

No muddy access roads

A frozen road and plot carry deliveries better than the soft ground of spring and autumn. Just have the access cleared and gritted in time and materials arrive without trouble.

Dry frost helps the build

Winter air tends to be cold and dry. There is less moisture on site and the site stays cleaner.

A cleaner site

In winter there is less mud on site and the building needs less protection than in the rainy months.

Moving in before summer

If construction starts early in the year, you can move into your new home before summer.

How to prepare a winter build

Get in touch well in advance, ideally by the end of autumn. That leaves enough time for planning and lets you make full use of the winter season.

Groundworks and foundations are best done before winter. If that is not possible, they can be done in frost too – they just need careful planning.

With the basics settled, you can follow the build calmly and the house is finished on time.
