KONTIO timber homes — mountain cabin in Norway

Norwegian couple Turid and Øivind wanted to build a cabin in the mountains, a place to escape to in summer and winter alike to relax and unwind from hectic city life. They wanted a cabin built from durable wood, and from the start they planned to entrust its construction to KONTIO. Turid, who is an architect, prepared all the drawings needed for the cabin herself before approaching KONTIO with them.

The plot for the cabin is in Gåsbu, in eastern Norway, an area with an unusual, wild beauty that's especially popular with cross-country skiers in winter, and cyclists and hikers in summer.

"KONTIO caught our attention — we like the modern style and the timeless design of their homes. We also like that KONTIO homes are built not only to a top standard of quality, but also very quickly, so you can move in and make full use of them within half a year of starting construction. Throughout the work on our house, a KONTIO representative was available to us, communicating with us regularly and sorting out everything related to the build, overseeing the whole process to our complete satisfaction," say Turid and Øivind.

The mountain cabin is compact — its total usable floor area is 70 m² — yet there's still plenty of room to comfortably put up a larger number of guests overnight. At the heart of the home is a beautiful living room with direct access to a large, covered terrace. On the terrace sits a hot tub, which gets plenty of use both summer and winter.

Large windows in the living room and bedrooms brighten the atmosphere inside the house and connect its interior with the world outside. Turid and Øivind love the bright Scandinavian style of soft colours in which they've furnished the inside of the cabin. Black window frames complement the style nicely. Turid, whose hobby is painting, added her own paintings to the interior.

The mountain cabin, which Turid designed herself, fully lives up to its proud owners' vision of a holiday home. A calm, beautiful spot amid nature, and a charming cabin that smells of wood, has become a second home for the couple. "We come here whenever we can, which is pretty much every weekend, and we often invite friends too — we go out and be active together during the day, and in the afternoon or evening we enjoy the beauty and comfort of our timber home," Turid concludes.
