What to check before you build a log home
Building regulations for your plot, the four factors of log-home quality, and why the builder really matters.

Before you start preparing your project, check with your local building authority which regulations apply to your plot — roof type and pitch, facade colour and material, ridge height. If the plot lies in a protected landscape area or nature park, even stricter conditions may apply. You'll need this information right at the start, not only when you file for a building permit.
The final quality of a log home is the product of four factors: material quality, the quality of the structural and technological solution, manufacturing quality, and assembly quality. It works like multiplication — if any one factor is zero, the whole result is zero.
Quality material means kiln-dried, glue-laminated beams of grade-A Nordic pine. Quality of the structural solution rests on years of in-house development and experience designing log homes. Manufacturing quality means CNC machining accurate to the millimetre, with no need for on-site sanding to fit. And assembly quality requires a team led by a certified foreman — unlike a masonry building, mistakes in a log structure are hard to fix once it's built, and may only show up years later as the wood settles.
"Those of us who live in a home like this can only recommend it. Living in a log home is genuinely unique. I know it sounds like a marketing line — until we had our own KONTIO log home built, I saw it exactly the same way."
Ing. Kamila Nábělková, Managing Director, KONTIO Czech Republic
